About the art

The Unicorn Rests in a Garden (1495–1505) is associated with the seven wall hangings known as the Unicorn Tapestries. Woven in fine wool and silk with silver and gilded threads, the tapestries depict scenes surrounding a hunt for the mythical unicorn. In this image, the unicorn rests in a pomegranate garden, a setting often connected with medieval symbolism around fertility and marriage. The cartoon originated in Paris and the textile was woven in the Southern Netherlands.
