About the art
Gothic Butterflies originates from an illustration by Charles Dessalines D’Orbigny (1806–1876), a French naturalist, botanist, and geologist. The work appeared in Dictionnaire Universel d’Histoire Naturelle (1849), a natural-history encyclopedia edited by D’Orbigny and known for its detailed hand-colored engravings.
