About the art
This illustration depicts a chart used in palmistry, or chiromancy. Palm reading flourished in Renaissance Europe and treated the geography of the hand as a symbolic landscape: “mountains,” “plains,” lines, and celestial correspondences were interpreted together. Manuals of chiromancy circulated in manuscript from the 14th century and were increasingly printed through the 17th century.
